UN38.3 is one of the lithium battery testing (UN38.3 Testing) body certified by Civil Aviation Administration of China in China (CAAC). To ensure transportation safety of battery by air and avoid unsafe incidents, CAAC issues “Standard for transport of lithium batteries by air” to various air transport companies, and clearly demands airports to strictly comply with the rules that UN 38.3 lithium battery test must be performed by the laboratory recognized by CAAC in process of accepting lithium batteries, and lithium batteries without qualified testing report of UN38.3 test cannot be accepted.


 UN38.3 testing requires all the transport of lithium batteries should pass these tests including: Altitude simulation, Thermal test, Vibration, Shock, External short circuit, Crush, Overcharge, Forced discharge. If the batteries are not packed the related devices, and each package contains more than 24 pieces of battery cells or more than 12 pieces of batteries. Being in such case, an extra test named 1.2 meter free-drop is required.


The total cost of such certification is not small, and different types of battery can not share the same test report. The examination rate varies with different type of batteries by different airlines. Therefore, the total cost divides into each products will be increased. Most importantly, batteries can be very dangerous if being packed improperly.

All these mentioned reasons that makes the logistics company take different measure to the shipping of batteries.
